Macmillan produced two nearly identical issues of this title, both with high quality bindings and paper: the UK domestic issue was printed in Somerset and the jacket carries the price (within a black rectangle) of 13.95 net sterling. "Pillars." is the first in the Kingsbridge series (now a trilogy which includes "World Without End", 2007 and "A Column of Fire", 2017) and "Pillars of Fire" may well turn out to be the author's best historical novel, as many of this current blockbusters appear hurried both in the writing and the publication. Follett's 'break-through' novel into the historical saga field, after an earlier career writing crime thrillers (often under psuedonyms), including the very successful spy thrillers beginning with "The Eye of the Needle" ("Storm Island") in 1978. Top edge slightly foxed, some slight differentiation of paper tones on the edges, otherwise fine in fine dustjacket handsomely illustrated by Andrew Wheatcroft. Export jacket with black rectangle on the front flap, without the sterling price printed on. Second printing (same year as the first).
